… just send us a bunch of girls, too, we’d appreciate it …
[Description by Uncle Ricky]
This recording lost some oxide over the years, but the infrequent
drop-outs do not diminish the enjoyment of this unedited quarter-hour from
Wonderful WAKE in Atlanta, Georgia. WAKE was an early home
for Bill Drake and Paul Drew, but this Easter
Sunday, 1962 recording of Hitparader Ricky Lane is a long
way from what became “Boss Radio”. In fact, it features some of the grand embellishments of the first generation of the format, like a time-tone and reverb on demand.
This is also a short sample of a decidedly soul-flavored Southeastern
Top 40 playlist, with a majority of the tunes performed by R&B crossover
performers of the era.
Once again, we are grateful to the late Paul Allen. Paul made this
recording as a youngster. We thank him for sharing it with REELRADIO and being part of our project to preserve and present the history of music radio.
